Bertoletti gives a wonderful recollection of the devestation the people of Ireland faced during a horrible blight that plagued the country between 1845-1850. Many famine surviors refused to talk about their experiences during this time, but others passed their stories on through family and those stories are the basis for this book. The Great Famine changed Ireland forever, the effects are still felt today as Ireland's population is still only half of what it was in 1845. This is a great book showing how not only the loss of the country's stable food source the potato but also the actions of landlords and other countries changed the country forever.

This book can be incorporated into a history lesson or a government lesson for 6th through 8th grade students. It can give a much more personal approach to understanding this time in history.
