Bud, Not buddy---chapter book 12/ Coretta Scott King Award

Author: Christopher Paul Curtis
Published by: Delacorte Press, 1999
Genre: Historical Fiction
Primary Characters: Bud Caldwell
Themes: Music, adoption, runaways, Great Depression
Awards: Coretta Scott King, Newbery Medal, 2000

Curtis gives us a great story of adventure and survival as he tells the story of 10 year old Bud Caldwell. Bud decides to run away from his foster family, but has no idea were to go. He goes on a journey to the one place he can think of, on a search for a father he has never known. While he meets many people some good and some bad in the dreary setting of Great Depression times, the adventurous characteristics of Bud keeps the story light and full of laughs.

This is a great book for grades 4-7 while discussing the Great Depression. It will help introduce diversity into your curriculum, and bring the affects of the time onto a child's level.
