Author/Illustrator: Patricia Polacco

Genre: Juvenile Fiction
Primary Characters: Monique, Sevrine, Marcelle

The  Butterfly is the story of based on the courageous acts of Marcelle. Marcelle is the mother of Monique, she bravely hides Jewish families in the basement of her home in order to protect them as Germans occupy France during the World War II. Sevrine is a young girl of one of these families and secretly forms a friendship with Monique. This is truly a wonderful story about friendship and protecting those who cannot protect themselves. This would be a great way to introduce children in 3rd-6th grades to World War II and help them connect with it.
